Let’s talk skin. Remember when I tried my version of the 10-Step Korean Skincare Method? At the time the multiple step Korean routine was all the rage and I was trying to find a system that would keep my skin in check. I was even in the middle of saving some coins to invest in regularly seeing either a dermatologist, esthetician or both.

So I prayed and researched but I couldn’t find a local office In my area that really “spoke” to me.

But that’s when this video popped up in my YouTube subscription playlist…

…and then I found this Instagram account…

…and my skin has never been happier!


I’m not going to go through all the reasons why you should be following both of these beautiful women. You can thank me later for the homework you didn’t know you needed.

But what I will say is that the two heavily inspired my current daytime routine. Now let’s get into the details.

STEP 1: CLEANSE

I have been using Derma-E products for years. Their cleansers are my favorites because they are gentle but leave my face feeling clean and balanced. I’m not loyal to any specific cleanser of the brand. I usually buy based on either what’s on sale at Whole Foods or what’s in stock at Ulta.

STEP 2: TONE

Back when I didn’t know any better I was using witch hazel as a toner. This is where the YouTube video listed above taught me the error of my ways. I went out the very next day and purchased the Heritage Store Rose Water Facial Toner. A complete game changer. Within a week of use, I noticed a shift in my skin’s texture. Much more soft and supple like that of a baby.

STEP 3: SERUM

This hyaluronic acid serum from The Ordinary is my first real serum. I feel like such an adult, y’all! Now I have to be honest. Even on days when I skip this step (this quarantining can make your girl a little lazy at times) I don’t notice too much of a difference. I think it may be because my toner has hyaluronic acid in it as well.

STEP 4: MOISTURIZE

This moisturizer from The Ordinary is very lightweight and fragrance free. I think once I run out of this, I will try something new. I mean it is nice, but there’s no “WOW” factor about it.

STEP 5: PROTECT

SPF is a must! Even for People of Color.

Wait. Let me rephrase that.

SPF is a must ESPECIALLY for People of Color.

If you suffer from hyperpigmentation and/or dark marks from acne, you should be wearing sunscreen daily, even if you’re indoors all day.

I’ve noticed that if I’m consistent with this step that I not only see a reduction in any current dark spots on my face, but I also see fewer new spots pop up.

Oh and did I mention that the Black Girl Sunscreen is a Black Owned Business? Please support by either purchasing online or at your local Target. The brand also has a kids line and my two year old has her own bottle of sunscreen that she wears daily as well lol!
