Dear Black People, Please Wear Sunscreen

It’s the first day of Summer!

Now that I’m well into my early 30’s, skincare has become a priority for me. I’m not too worried about wrinkles at the moment. Honestly, I think they’re a beautiful characteristic of aging. My goal for now is to have an even complexion both in terms of tone and texture.

A few months ago I was on Google researching skin care regimens (read here and here) and after skimming the articles of the first few pages of my search results, I noticed that sunscreen was a must. Yes, even for us people of color.

Why is it necessary? Well, of course we all know about sunscreen protecting us from the sun’s UV rays and decreasing our chance of developing skin cancer. But did you know when acne is exposed those harsh rays, the melanin forming cells in our skin are stimulated, thus creating those dreaded dark marks. Now I’m all about celebrating the brown skin that I’m in, but I can live without the remnants of acne that once was.

In my continued effort to make buying from black owned businesses, I purchased the Black Girl Sunscreen directly from their website. I picked up the regular formula for myself and the kids’ version for my toddler. Luckily for you, the brand is now back in most Target stores.

Applied daily to clean and toned skin, I began noticing a change in my skin after about a week. My breakouts (which are minor I might add due to me being on birth control pills) were occurring less frequently and vanishing without any dark marks. Even when my skin’s oil attempts to breakthrough after a few hours of wear, the Black Girl Sunscreen’s ingredients of jojoba, cacao and carrot juice leave my skin with a nice glow and not oily.

They. Even. Recycle. Their. Empty. Bottles! Y’all know how I feel about recycling! You are asked to send in at least two empty bottles and you will be sent a surprise via e-mail. The full instructions of this process can be found on the brand’s website. I will be taking advantage of this soon since I’ve started applying the Black Girl Sunscreen to my face and body on a daily basis.

Listen sis. You need this sunscreen in your life. Periodt!
